Where should your thumb go? BREAK this rule!

playing technique Sep 09, 2021

Where should your thumb go? This is the question we're addressing in today's guitar lesson for beginners. Should it always go in the middle of the back of the neck? No. Break this rule! Actually, it's not really a rule. Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com with another beginner guitar lesson for you about where your thumb should go on the guitar neck. When it comes to proper thumb placement on guitar, there are several things that get left out of the conversation. A lot of people are just dogmatic when talking about the best thumb position for guitar, but you have to consider the context of what you're playing. There are definitely times & contexts when playing with your thumb behind the neck is the correct thumb position for guitar, but there are also a lot of times when the thumb over the guitar technique is equally valid and useful. The trick is knowing which one to use at what time so that's what we're going to go over in today's guitar lesson.

What Are Guitar Scale Modes For Beginners?

music theory Sep 04, 2021

What are guitar scale modes for beginners is the topic of today's guitar lesson for beginners. Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com here with another beginner guitar lesson on guitar modes explained simply. Modes is a confusing term for a lot of beginner guitar players. I know I was confused by it a lot when I started out. Really, though, anybody can understand what modes are & they aren't as complicated as it sounds. If you take the notes of the C Major scale, for example, you can create 7 different modes. One mode for each note of the scale (C D E F G A B). All you have to do is start on a different note of the scale. If I start that scale on C & play up to the next C, it's going to sound like the major scale. But if I start on D & play up to the next D note, it's the exact same notes, but it sounds totally different. I'm going to walk through how to do that with each of the 7 modes of the C major scale today to help with guitar modes explained.

The first major road block to being able to change chords fast & smooth is not understanding all of the biomechanical steps that your body & brain have to go through to perform a chord change. So I'm going to break that down into the 7 steps that have to happen so that you can make that easier & then I'll give you an exercise using a metronome to help you with your chord changes. Then we'll go over the one minute changes exercise I got years ago from Justin Guitar that has really helped a lot of my students over the years. By using these three tips your chord changes will become a lot smoother and a lot faster & make you sound like a rock star.

How to Make Any Chord Progression Sound Better

playing technique Aug 28, 2021

How to make any chord progression sound better is the subject of today's guitar lesson for beginners. Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com here with another beginner guitar lesson for you about one simple thing you can do to any chord progression to make it sound better. This is actually a really, simple tip. Most of the time when people play a chord progression, they change the chord on beat one of the next measure. Instead, what I want you to experiment with is changing chords earlier like on beat number 4 or the 'and' of 4. The listeners ear won't expect this change as much so it will instantly spice up any chord progression you're playing & make it sound better. Give this a try on the next chord progression you're working on in your songwriting or with any chord progression exercises you're working on with your strumming & see how much of an impact it can have.
