This Is the MISSING PIECE in Your Guitar Learning That Is Keeping You Stuck

Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com. This blog post transcribes my YouTube video on the number one thing that's missing from most approaches to learning guitar — the thing that keeps people strumming for months or years without the progress they deserve.

Information Is Not the Same as Training

Most people dive in by hunting for information: YouTube tutorials, online courses, books, sometimes teachers. How to play this chord. How to master that scale. Information is great. It's a starting point. We need it.

Brutal truth: information alone won't make you a better guitarist. What's missing is training.

Think about learning to drive. You could read every manual and watch hours of videos on steering and braking. Until you get behind the wheel and actually practice with someone guiding you through the turns and stops, you're not really driving.

Guitar is the same. Most folks consume info, nod along like "yeah, I get it," and then they don't put in the focused effort to train their fingers, their timing, or their muscle memory to actually do it.

The Weekly Lesson Trap

Even with guitar teachers, I've seen this a ton. The lesson goes: teacher shares some new content, answers a few questions, says "practice this at home this week." Then it's on you.

Life gets busy. Motivation dips. A lot of us struggle through the week without nailing it correctly — maybe we practice wrong, or not enough, or we skip the hard parts. Next lesson we show up half prepared, get more new stuff piled on, and the cycle repeats. Before you know it, you're overwhelmed with a mountain of information and a massive gap in actual playing skills.

We have to close the gap between what you know and what you can do.

What Training Actually Is

Training isn't just passive practice. It's active, guided work that builds the skills you need to actually play. Doing the exercises right there. Getting feedback in the moment. Repeating until it sticks. It's what turns "I know what to do" into "I can do it effortlessly."

Almost no teachers incorporate real training into their lessons — in person, online, and especially in courses. Some do. For the majority of adult students I work with who've been stuck for years, this is the major missing ingredient. They know a lot of stuff. They just haven't had training to do it.

There's so much more to learning guitar than intellectually understanding concepts or gobbling up more content. You have to use it, apply it, make it second nature. A coach or teacher who builds training into the program is the secret sauce. You're not just learning — you're transforming your playing through deliberate, effective practice. You get a lot more results per minute.

If This Sounds Familiar

If you've been jumping from course to course without real progress, or even working with a teacher but seeing minimal results, the fix is not another information dump. It's focused training on the fundamentals — chord changes, strumming, basic rhythm — until you can actually do them, not just recognize them on a screen.

That's the kind of work we do in coaching, including the Guitar Mastery Circle. Training, not just teaching.
